A self-tape is a technical and creative deliverable. At MAM Associates we hold a consistent benchmark for every tape that leaves our roster.
These benchmarks are based on current casting expectations, not outdated rules.
Framing
Medium close-up unless the brief specifies otherwise. Eyeline just off lens. Clean neutral background. No distractions behind you.
Lighting
Soft, even lighting on the face. No harsh shadows, no backlighting, no coloured light unless the scene requires it. Daylight is fine if it’s consistent.
Sound
Clear, close audio. No reverb, no air-con hum, no traffic. Use an external mic if your camera struggles with audio. Mono is fine.
Reader
Trained reader if possible. The reader should be audible but not louder than you. Flat, competent readers always beat dramatic ones.
Slate
Short, clean, professional. Name, role, agency. Natural energy. No gimmicks unless casting specifically asks.
File
MP4, correctly labelled, correctly sized. Sent to us. Not direct to casting. Unless explicitly agreed.
On time
Delivered ahead of deadline so we can watch, flag anything, and submit confidently. Last-minute tapes force last-minute decisions.
Meeting these benchmarks is baseline. What makes a tape bookable is covered in how to be memorable in the room.
The takeaway
A professional tape is the floor. A memorable performance is the ceiling. Both are non-negotiable.
Send tapes to that standard when you apply for representation.
